AI Language Learning: A Promising Future, But Teacher Training and Concerns Remain (comparing east and west)

While artificial intelligence (AI) has entered many aspects of education, its role in language learning remains under-researched, particularly regarding teachers’ perspectives. A study sheds light on this gap by exploring the attitudes of language teachers in Eastern and Western countries towards AI-assisted language learning (AIALL).

The research employed a qualitative approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews with six language teachers from Eastern (Vietnam, Iran, Indonesia) and Western (Spain, Germany, United Kingdom) countries. The interviews focused on teachers’ perceptions of AIALL’s potential benefits and drawbacks.

Positive Outlook with a Dose of Anxiety

The study revealed a generally positive outlook on AIALL’s potential. All participants acknowledged the potential benefits for language learning, including personalized instruction, improved feedback, and increased accessibility. However, a sense of anxiety regarding AI’s role in the classroom was present across both Eastern and Western groups.

Cultural Differences in Concerns

Interestingly, the study also identified cultural differences in teachers’ specific concerns about AIALL.

  • Equitable Access: Eastern participants expressed concerns about equitable access to technology, particularly in resource-limited settings.
  • Skill Balance: Western participants worried that AIALL might overemphasize certain skills, such as grammar, at the expense of others like speaking fluency.
  • Ethical Considerations: Both groups shared concerns about plagiarism and cheating facilitated by AI language tools.

These findings highlight the importance of considering cultural contexts when implementing AIALL in language education.

Teacher Training and Rethinking Assessment

The study emphasizes the crucial role of teacher training in effectively integrating AIALL into language classrooms. Teachers need the skills to:

  • Select and utilize appropriate AI tools: Training can equip teachers to evaluate and choose AI tools that align with their curriculum and teaching goals.
  • Develop engaging AI-supported lessons: Teachers should learn to integrate AI tools seamlessly into their lessons to maximize their effectiveness.
  • Rethink assessment strategies: AI tools can provide valuable data for formative assessment, but teachers need to adapt their approaches to prevent plagiarism and cheating.

This study paves the way for further research on AIALL and its impact on language learning. By understanding teachers’ perspectives and addressing their concerns, educators can harness the power of AI to create engaging and effective learning experiences for students worldwide.
