Big Brand Names Must be Accountable for Plastic Waste

Plastic pollution is a growing environmental crisis, choking our oceans, littering our landscapes, and threatening wildlife. Unveiling the Polluters: Brand Names on Plastic Waste

This research utilized data collected during a five-year global program (2018-2022) that spanned 84 countries. The program involved 1576 audit events where researchers documented and identified brands found on plastic items polluting the environment.

The findings reveal a concerning trend:

  • Half of Plastic Waste Unbranded: Significantly, 50% of the plastic items collected lacked any brand identification. This highlights the need for stricter regulations mandating producer responsibility for plastic waste, regardless of branding.
  • Top Polluters Revealed: The study identified the top five global brands associated with plastic pollution: The Coca-Cola Company (11%), PepsiCo (5%), Nestlé (3%), Danone (3%), and Altria (2%). These five brands collectively account for a staggering 24% of the total branded plastic waste documented. Furthermore, the study identified 56 companies exceeding a 50% share of the branded plastic pollution identified.
  • Production and Pollution: A Clear Link: The research uncovered a strong correlation between a company’s annual plastic production and the amount of branded plastic waste found in the environment. This suggests that companies producing the most plastic are also the most significant contributors to plastic pollution.
  • Food and Beverage Giants: Leading Polluters: The study identified food and beverage companies as disproportionately represented among the top polluters. This finding aligns with the widespread use of single-use plastic packaging in these industries.
