Eggshell Recycling Scores Big: New Sensor Detects Antibiotics in Water with Remarkable Accuracy

Antibiotics are crucial in fighting infections, but their overuse and improper disposal can pose environmental threats. A study tackles these concerns by developing a highly accurate and eco-friendly sensor made from recycled eggshells to detect antibiotics in water.

The Challenge: Monitoring Antibiotics in Water

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics, like Ofloxacin (OFL) and Ciprofloxacin (CIP), are commonly used to treat bacterial infections, including those associated with COVID-19 pneumonia. Recycling Eggshells for a Greener Solution

  • Eggshell Power: The study utilizes eggshells, a common household waste product, as a source of calcium to create calcium copper oxide nanostructures (Ca2CuO3 NS).
  • Building a Better Sensor: These nanostructures are then incorporated into a carbon paste electrode (CPE), a type of electrochemical sensor. This modified CPE demonstrates significantly enhanced efficiency in detecting OFL and CIP compared to unmodified electrodes.
