Green Tea Extract Boosts Effectiveness of Exercise for Weight Loss in Overweight Women

A study suggests that green tea extract (GTE) can significantly enhance the weight loss and anti-inflammatory benefits of exercise for overweight women. This study investigated the combined effects of GTE and exercise on body composition and inflammatory markers in inactive overweight women.

The study involved 30 female participants who were classified as overweight. They were randomly divided into three groups:

  • Endurance Training + Placebo (ET + P): This group participated in an 8-week endurance training program but received a placebo instead of green tea extract.
  • Endurance Training + Green Tea Extract (ET + GTE): This group underwent the same exercise program as the first group but also took daily green tea extract capsules (500mg).
  • Control Group: This group did not participate in any exercise program and received a placebo.

The endurance training program consisted of three sessions per week, incorporating aerobics, aerobic circuit training, and moderate-intensity walking or jogging.

Green Tea Extract Enhances Weight Loss

The study found significant improvements in body composition for both exercise groups compared to the control group. These improvements included:

  • Decreased body weight
  • Reduced body mass index (BMI)
  • Lower waist-to-hip ratio
  • Decreased body fat percentage

However, the group that combined exercise with green tea extract (ET + GTE) experienced a significantly greater reduction in these measurements compared to the exercise-only group (ET + P). This suggests that GTE supplementation can amplify the weight loss benefits of exercise.

Reduced Inflammation and Improved Metabolism

The study also analyzed the levels of specific molecules associated with inflammation and metabolism in the participants’ blood. Both exercise groups showed:

  • Increased adiponectin, a hormone with anti-inflammatory and fat-burning properties.
  • Decreased high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), a marker of inflammation.

Importantly, the group combining GTE with exercise (ET + GTE) exhibited a more significant increase in adiponectin and decrease in hs-CRP compared to the exercise-only group (ET + P). This indicates that GTE may further enhance the anti-inflammatory and metabolic benefits of exercise.

No Change in Certain Inflammatory Markers

The researchers did not observe significant changes in other inflammatory markers like interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha across the three groups.

Overall, the study suggests that green tea extract can be a valuable addition to an exercise program for overweight women seeking to maximize weight loss and reduce inflammation.

Limitations and Future Research

It is important to note that this study involved a relatively small sample size and focused solely on overweight women. Further research with larger and more diverse populations is needed to confirm these findings. Additionally, the optimal dosage and duration of GTE supplementation for weight loss and its long-term safety require further investigation.
