A three-year study sheds light on the crucial role of magnesium in potato quality and safety, offering valuable insights for farmers and consumers alike.

The Secret Ingredient: Magnesium for Perfect Spuds

Magnesium, a vital soil nutrient, plays a surprising role in potato quality:

  • Growth and Development: Magnesium deficiency hinders potato growth and development, impacting overall yield.
  • Cooking Characteristics: The study reveals a clear link between magnesium fertilization and cooked potato texture. Applications of 60 and 90 kg MgO ha-1 resulted in the most desirable textures, described as tender and firm, respectively.
  • Nitrogen Management: Magnesium, along with biostimulants (natural compounds promoting plant growth), influences plant nitrogen management. This is crucial for controlling harmful nitrate and nitrite levels in tubers.
