Organic Corn Gets a Boost: New Fertilizer Improves Water Efficiency

Organic farming often presents challenges in providing mid-season nitrogen (N) for crops. A study explores the potential of cyano-fertilizer, produced on-farm using nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, as a sustainable solution that can improve water use efficiency (WUE) in sweet corn.

The Organic Nitrogen Dilemma: Finding Sustainable Solutions

Organic farmers traditionally rely on off-farm sources for mid-season nitrogen, raising concerns about transportation and environmental impact. While alternatives like blood meal and feather meal exist, their application methods limit their effectiveness.

Cyano-fertilizer: A Homegrown Hero

This research investigates the potential of cyano-fertilizer, produced by cultivating nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria on farms. This innovative approach offers several advantages:

  • On-Farm Production: Cyano-fertilizer can be produced directly on farms, reducing reliance on external sources and minimizing transportation costs.
  • Sustainable Source of Nitrogen: Cyanobacteria naturally fix nitrogen from the air, providing a sustainable and eco-friendly nutrient source for organic crops.

Testing Efficiency: A Two-Year Field Study

Researchers conducted a two-year field study to compare the impact of various nitrogen fertilizers on sweet corn water use efficiency:

  • Fertilizer Options: The study evaluated four options – fish emulsion, blood meal, feather meal, and cyano-fertilizer.
  • Application Methods: Fish emulsion and cyano-fertilizer were applied through drip irrigation throughout the growing season, while blood meal and feather meal were incorporated into the soil before planting.
  • Water Use Efficiency: Researchers measured water use efficiency in two ways:
    • Field Water Use Efficiency (fWUE): Overall water use compared to crop yield.
    • Instantaneous Water Use Efficiency (iWUE): Rate of water vapor exchange through leaves.

The Power of Plant Hormones and Iron

The study also investigated the link between specific elements in organic fertilizers and water use efficiency:

  • Salicylic Acid (SA): A positive correlation was observed between SA content in fertilizers and both fWUE and iWUE. SA may play a role in regulating plant water use.
  • Iron (Fe): Fertilizers high in iron content were linked to increased leaf vapor pressure deficit and transpiration rate, suggesting an influence on plant water relations.

Cyano-fertilizer Takes the Lead

The study revealed that cyano-fertilizer produced the highest yield and water use efficiency among the tested options. Researchers attribute this success to the high SA content in cyano-fertilizer. Fish emulsion also performed well in the first year of the study.

While the study highlights the promise of cyano-fertilizer, further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind its positive impact on water use efficiency.
